PAUL is a big boy now, but he had two experiences when he was very small that have always been a great help to him, and you will see why he never forgot them. The first took place just after he had started to attend the Christian Science Sunday School. He was not quite three years old.
One sunny morning Paul and Mother watched a mother bird and her baby on the trellis outside the window. The mother bird was trying to teach the little one to fly. Time and again, with encouraging chirps and twitters, she flew from the trellis to the ground. The baby bird would ruffle up its feathers, draw its little body together, and then relax. It just could not seem to get up enough confidence to make the final try.
Mother watched as long as she could, and then she went about her housework, while Paul stayed at the window. All of a sudden she heard Paul's voice call out with sweetness and trust: "What are you afraid of, little birdie? Truth and Love are there.'" When she went to the window just a minute later the young bird was flying happily back and forth from the trellis to the ground, and very soon, with even greater confidence and joy, it flew away.
