Testimonies of Healing

Mary Baker Eddy says in "Science and Health...

From the December 1950 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Mary Baker Eddy says in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 494), "Divine Love always has met and always will meet every human need." The sight of this quotation upon the wall of the branch church of which I am a member is a constant reminder to me of the many opportunities I have had to prove this statement true in meeting my daily needs.

A cyst on the eyelid, which medical science had declared could be removed only by surgery, was healed by the earnest application of the truths I was then learning in a Christian Science Sunday School. An annually recurrent siege of colds was permanently healed. While I was grateful for these and many other proofs of the healing efficacy of Christian Science, I nevertheless failed to "stand porter at the door of thought" (ibid., p. 392) when I went away to college. Instead of standing for Principle, I indulged in smoking and social drinking in order to be considered "a good fellow." In my sophomore year I had a serious cough. As I was attending a state university, I was obliged to permit X-ray pictures to be taken of my chest. My parents were summoned and informed that I had tuberculosis, and the pictures were produced to substantiate this claim. I returned to my home and worked diligently in Science to remove the spots on my lungs, but periodic sessions before the X-ray camera showed no improvement. The harder I studied, the more of a reality I was making of the false material evidence.

As the time approached for me to take my Army physical examination, I became increasingly disturbed, as it seemed that this condition would keep me from doing what I perceived to be my duty. The day before I was to report for induction X rays were again taken. They revealed no noticeable change. That night I worked to know that nothing could keep me from my rightful place, because I was actually already there, in "the secret place of the most High" (Ps. 91:1). The following day I passed the physical and was declared "perfect." The Army-administered X ray failed to disclose any spots on my lungs. There was not even any evidence of scar tissue. Ensuing periodic X rays given me, and all other flying personnel of the Army Air Force, failed to record anything but a healthy condition.
