The poem "Feed My Sheep" (Poems, p. 14) was written by Mary Baker Eddy when she was pastor of The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston and was carrying on the stupendous task of founding and leading the Christian Science movement. The spirit of humility and teachableness revealed in this poem characterized Mrs. Eddy in all her work for the Cause of Christian Science. Today, as a loved hymn, the words of her poem tenderly remind us to trust in the gentle shepherding of divine Love and experience the freedom and harmony which attend obedience to divine law.
The spiritual regeneration which follows submission to the demands of divine Love and the surrender of the beliefs of mortal selfhood is outlined in the second verse, which reads:
"Thou wilt bind the stubborn will,
Wound the callous breast,
Make self-righteousness be still,
Break earth's stupid rest."
