FOR WHAT ARE WE PRAYING?

From the June 1950 issue of The Christian Science Journal

"Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts." May not this text from the fourth chapter of the epistle of James hold the explanation for a delayed realization of a better sense of supply, place, health, companionship, or any of the many human needs one may have?

A Christian Scientist in the armed forces found, upon his arrival at a separation center, that it would probably be at least ten days before he could even expect to start the processing for his discharge. From the experiences of those around him he saw that the period of waiting was usually close to three weeks. This was disturbing to him because he had hoped for an early discharge so that he could re-enter school for the semester that was just beginning. As far as he knew, it was necessary that he be discharged within a week in order to start the new term before registration closed; otherwise he would have to wait about five months, until the next school term began.

With these arguments pressing in upon him he turned his thought to God. He acknowledged and was grateful for the protection and harmony that had been his through the war as a result of his study and application of Christian Science. He declared that God would continue to bless him and tried to realize that man, God's idea or reflection, could not exist anywhere but in divine Mind. However the pressure of events and the discontent and anxiety of those around him seemed very real, and he was unable to completely lift his thought above them. Knowing that such a state of consciousness was not conducive to a demonstration of the harmony of Soul, he telephoned a Christian Science practitioner for assistance in realizing that God's plan for him was good and was always unfolding.
