There have been many healings in our family through Christian Science treatment. Some of the conditions healed were of a minor nature; others were considered serious. I myself experienced healings of such a positive nature that no doubt remained of God's power to heal. This confidence was gained through the study of Christian Science as given us by Mary Baker Eddy in our textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures."
For some years when living in Indiana, I had been interested in Christian Science. I moved to Michigan, and there "the thing which I greatly feared [came] upon me, and that which I was afraid of [came] unto me" (Job 3:25). I had to quit my work, give up my home, and return to Indiana. I had help from different Christian Science practitioners, and eventually returned to Michigan and work, but was not healed.
The suffering returned and seemed unbearable at times. Then I yielded to the temptation to turn to medicine. As Mrs. Eddy states in our textbook (p. 238), "To fall away from Truth in times of persecution, shows that we never understood Truth." The medicine soon failed in its potency. I changed to more powerful doses and steadily grew worse. Later I was hospitalized and operated on. With poor health and little hope, I moved to a remote area of upper Michigan. One day in a magazine I read the advertisement of a life insurance company which gave four or five symptoms of internal cancer. I had them all. I had entertained the thought of this disease for years. Here was a definite confirmation, leaving me no hope, only fear.
