The healing power of Christian Science was proved for me many years ago. I was suffering at the time from a physical condition which the doctors had failed to diagnose. They asked for a consultation with a surgeon, and it was decided that an operation was necessary. When I was allowed to return home from the hospital, I was told by the surgeon that with careful nursing I would be myself again in a year's time. However, in about six months all the symptoms returned and in a much worse form. I overheard the surgeon telling my husband that I was in too weak a condition to stand another operation, but that I must return to the hospital in order to be under constant observation.
We had at the time three small children, and in my great concern for them I earnestly prayed for the restoration of my health in order to fulfill my duty to them. I wrote a cousin with whom I had been very friendly during our school days, as I felt she would be genuinely interested in the children, asking her to come to see me. I remembered hearing that she had become interested in Christian Science, so I added a postscript to the letter saying, "Perhaps you will tell me about your Christian Science." I knew nothing of this Science, and my motive in writing her was only to let her know that I might be interested, and I hoped this would be an incentive for her to come to see me.
On her way to our home she stopped at a Christian Science Reading Room and borrowed from their Free Lending Library a copy of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, that I might have it to read. However, when she saw me, she was greatly concerned and unknown to me called my husband at his office and recommended that he cancel arrangements for the hospital and try Christian Science, if only for a few days.
