I accepted Christian Science because I was told it would help my two young children, who were constantly ailing, and I had lost confidence in medical remedies.
When the youngest child was very ill, "in my distress I called upon the Lord, and cried unto my God: he heard my voice out of his temple, and my cry came before him, even into his ears" (Ps. 18:6). Not long after this a friend presented Christian Science to me. She obtained a copy of the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, for me to read, and I soon realized that it was a spiritually inspired book.
I became aware that the fear which I had ignorantly entertained for my children was one of the contributing causes of their recurring illnesses. As the truth began to unfold to me that the children were actually not mortal beings, but God's ideas, created in His image and likeness, they responded to that enlightened concept of themselves. Christian Science became our only medicine and God our only physician. Healings of sore throat, coughs, colds, and so-called children's diseases resulted, and a better sense of health was maintained. An added blessing was the lifting of the burdensome expense of nurses, and hospital bills. The words of Christ Jesus (John 8:32), "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free," were being proved true. After the children were enrolled in the Christian Science Sunday School, they learned to apply the truth for themselves. It was a constant comfort to me, as it must be to many mothers, that Christian Science came to us when the children were young and that they had that foundation to build on through their growing-up years.
