DOMINION OVER THE ILLUSION OF WAR

From the March 1951 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Just before being sent overseas during the Second World War, a young Christian Scientist talked to a Christian Science practitioner who had been his Sunday School teacher for several years. In discussing the experience the soldier was facing, the practitioner said to him, "Go wherever your duty calls you and do whatever is humanly necessary, but wherever you are—on a transport, in a bomber, during the midst of a battle—never enter into the illusion that hating, or any other evil, is real." Through the years he served with the armed forces the young Scientist faithfully tried to follow this advice, and at the end of the war he was discharged unscathed.

Christ Jesus said (John 4:24), "God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth;" and Mary Baker Eddy, devout follower of Christ Jesus, says in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 14): "Entirely separate from the belief and dream of material living, is the Life divine, revealing spiritual understanding and the consciousness of man's dominion over the whole earth. This understanding casts out error and heals the sick, and with it you can speak 'as one having authority.'" Today, wherever men instructed by Christian Science are beginning to understand and demonstrate the divine Science of the Scriptures, they are actually and literally ending war here and now in our own day and time.

Christian Science teaches that God is divine Principle, the First Cause, the creator of all that really exists. Because God is infinite Mind and Spirit, He never creates material objects and personalities, but is manifested through spiritual ideas. Since God is divine Love and infinite good, He could not make evil or an evil thing. Consequently evil cannot and does not have actual existence. It is ignorance of God that hides the unbroken relationship of God to man as Principle and its idea, Mind and its infinite expression, Love and its perfect manifestation, Soul and its intelligent representative, Spirit and its pure reflection.
