The testimonies in the periodicals were what most appealed to me when I first took up the study of Christian Science. Their sincerity and indisputable logic convinced me that Christian Science works. I wanted it to work for me, and it surely has done so and continues to do so.
One experience I should like to tell, because it shows so clearly how the giving up of one's fear and human plans and letting God's way be manifested brings complete healing. The disorder appeared suddenly and, at first, as a severe case of influenza. The first phase to be overcome was the fear of and the submission to the possibility of death. From the onset of the attack I grew rapidly worse, although I was having work done by a Christian Science practitioner. One evening I found myself thinking that I was about to pass on, and I did not seem to care. The practitioner was called, and it was a matter of minutes only before the extreme fear of my husband that this would happen to me was uncovered and cast out. Immediately I was released from the apathy and at the same time from the high fever.
Thereafter followed healings of discouragement, self-condemnation, self-pity, extreme weariness, and weakness, as well as of severe pain, which came from some sort of internal disarrangement. During the experience, which extended over about two months, I had opportunities presented to me in wondrous ways to explain Christian Science to two persons who were eager to learn of it. I was glad, too, that other ways were presented to me for helping others, although I was at home throughout the experience. One day when assistance in caring for the family's needs seemed urgent, I prayed in the words which conclude one of the hymns written by our beloved Leader, Mrs. Eddy (Poems, p. 12):
