THE DIVINELY NATURAL

From the February 1952 issue of The Christian Science Journal

While the oneness of Deity was the very foundation of Mosaic law, the all-goodness of infinite God and the oneness of infinite good were revealed by Christ Jesus. "Why callest thou me good?" he asked a certain ruler, adding, "None is good, save one, that is, God" (Luke 18:19). Christian Science reinforces those immortal words of the Master's with these by its Discoverer and Founder, Mary Baker Eddy (Miscellaneous Writings, p. 101): "If God is All, and God is good, it follows that all must be good; and no other power, law, or intelligence can exist. On this proof rest premise and conclusion in Science, and the facts that disprove the evidence of the senses." In prayer and praise Christ Jesus declared the all-goodness and omnipotence of God. Thus understanding the true nature of Spirit and the spiritual nature of true sonship, he proved the all-goodness of the Father to be divinely natural to the Son, His image and likeness.

"Jesus stooped not to human consciousness, nor to the evidence of the senses," writes Mrs. Eddy in "Unity of Good" (p. 11). Although he moved among men, his thoughts were with God, in that one eternal consciousness of good which owns no taint of earthliness. The meekest of all men, he laid no claim to any power, law, or intelligence apart from God; hence his prayer, which was destined to unite all Christian peoples throughout all time, culminated in that immortal acknowledgment (Matt 6:13, "Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever."

By fully acknowledging the supremacy of divine law, Jesus paid no honor to material law; rather did he annul it. Hence its claims to reality and power found no lodgment in his thought and no expression in his works. His life attested the sincerity of his arresting statement to his disciples (John 8:29), "I do always those things that please him." And in pleasing the Father he became the Way-shower of mankind.
