THE LAW OF GOD

From the February 1952 issue of The Christian Science Journal

As we study the Bible we cannot fail to be impressed by the frequency with which "the law" is mentioned as associated with God. In the early history of Israel some Soul-inspired prophets in moments of spiritual perception grasped the fact that real law is a divine concept of perfection, governing and sustaining man, and they proved their understanding of and obedience to it by the performance of marvelous demonstrations of the power of Spirit to heal human conditions of lack, disease, and death.

At the time Jesus appeared, the outstanding feature of the Jewish religion was its extreme emphasis on the material observance of the man-made laws, ecclesiastical, medical, and economic, that governed it. However, obedience to these laws by the priests of Israel did not enable them to duplicate the demonstrations of divine power that the old-time prophets had achieved. The vital, effective power of God's law had been lost by a materially-minded priesthood during the centuries.

Yet Jesus with his amazing proofs of divine healing power declared that he was fulfilling the law. This was a strange statement. The law had for centuries proved powerless to heal in the hands of the priests of Israel. How could that law be so irresistibly effective when practiced by Jesus? Did he really use the same law, or did his advent herald the voicing of a new law?
