WHEN GOD SPEAKS

From the February 1952 issue of The Christian Science Journal

At a Wednesday evening testimony meeting in a branch Church of Christ, Scientist, a testifier was heard to say, "If God has not spoken, nothing has been said." One listener pondered these words and realized how true it is that the truths of God and His spiritual creation, spoken either audibly or mentally, render anything else of no account. The Scriptures abound with instances which relate that "God spake," that "God saith," or that "the Lord said." The first of these is found in the first chapter of Genesis (verse 3): "And God said, Let there be light: and there was light." What God says immediately is, always has been, and forever will be, for it is the voice of Truth, Mind, declaring its own omnipresence, omnipotence, and majesty.

Christian Science teaches that God is Principle, Spirit, man's loving Father-Mother, and that the real man is ever conscious of his at-one-ment with his divine Parent, Mind. Abraham, Jacob, Isaac, Moses, Joseph, and many others heard God's voice, not only once, but frequently. On page 308 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mary Baker Eddy says, "The Soul-inspired patriarchs heard the voice of Truth, and talked with God as consciously as man talks with man."

In the New Testament we have the record that God, through His angel, spoke to Mary and Joseph, telling them of the coming of the child Jesus. Because he understood his unity with God, Jesus constantly heard His voice. Throughout his grand and holy career he continually companioned and communed with his heavenly Father. Through spiritual sense he was able to determine the difference between God's voice and the aggressive mental suggestions of the carnal mind.
