I first heard of Christian Science in 1943, and two years later I found myself relying on the truths that are embodied in this religion. My mother-in-law had been sending me the religious articles from The Christian Science Monitor, but I never seemed to have time to read them until, upon a routine physical examination, my husband, a pilot, had been informed by several physicians that he had a severe case of diabetes and would never be able to fly again. Then almost in desperation I began reading these articles.
Each time I came to the statement, "So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him" (Gen.1: 27), I stopped, pondered, and affirmed this truth, rejoicing in it. I felt a sense of peace I had not known before, and my fear left me. Three days later my husband called me from the hospital, where he had been undergoing a series of intensive tests, and said that he was on his way home; he also said that the doctors were amazed because the evidence of diabetes had entirely disappeared.
Even after this proof of the power of the Word I remained apathetic about Christian Science. But two years later, when my husband was in need of employment, I again turned to it for help. This need was met, and I realized then that I must investigate this religion. Since turning to Christian Science I have been healed of social drinking, the smoking habit, and many unlovely traits of character, including that of a so-called inherited and ungovernable temper.
