TURNING TO THE LIGHT

From the March 1952 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Mary Baker Eddy's love for the Bible, her reliance on it as her only authority and her only textbook in revealing to mankind the Science of Christianity, is indeed an inspiration to all who take up the study of Christian Science. Throughout her writings, including her beautiful messages to The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts, she uses numerous quotations from the Bible to enrich and strengthen her teachings.

It is interesting to note that Mrs. Eddy ends one of her messages to a branch church with some words of comfort from the Scriptures (see The First Church of Christ, Scientist, an d Miscellany, p. 206). Here she quotes five passages from the Bible, and each of these is on the subject of light. One is from I Peter (2:9): "Ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light." A study of this passage and the other Bible verses quoted by our Leader cannot fail to bring comfort and healing. Let us turn to the everlasting light, to Truth, acknowledge the ever-presence of God, and continue to walk in this light.

The weather forecast one morning predicted little or no sunshine for the day. Perhaps that was why a student of Christian Science, as she started out that cloudy morning, was surprised when suddenly she noticed her shadow. If there is a shadow, she thought, there must be sunshine. She was beginning to feel the warmth of the sun, and turning round she saw that the clouds had parted and the sun was shining. Yes, she said to herself, whenever we see a shadow, we have but to turn round and we shall see the sun.
