UNITY THROUGH ONENESS

From the March 1952 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Divine Principle, infinite Love, is constantly saying: "I am All-in-all, the one Being, the only consciousness, the source of all identity. The spiritual idea and I are inseparable." This expresses the true union, the unity of God and man, which Christian Science reveals. It is the basis of the brotherhood of man. God being the one universal Father, His sons and daughters must be one family, unified by Love. When there seems to be something else which says there is separation, it is a misinterpretation of reality. Such a mistaken sense can never be valid. Nor can action undertaken on the assumption of division be effective.

Men often wish to manifest unity with God and their fellow men, but they do not know how. Just as humans try to heal a sick body by changing something in the matter dream, so they would try to heal the body politic by changing the social structure. While Christian Scientists, as individually prompted, support constructive group action, they know that universal harmony depends on men's understanding of the spiritual idea, the Christ-consciousness of God's allness and of man's inseparability from Him. Mary Baker Eddy says in "Miscellaneous Writings" (p. 138), "I once thought that in unity was human strength; but have grown to know that human strength is weakness,—that unity is divine might, giving to human power, peace."

An old book of United States history contains an illustration under the heading "In Union There is Strength." It shows a snake which has been divided into a number of parts, and underneath are the words, "United we stand; divided we fall." Yes, there is strength in union—in unity with God. But mortal sense believes that we are separated from God and each other and that we identify selfhood with mortality instead of spirituality. Common belief, looking at the finite misconception, tries to fasten the snake together again. It would expect to establish unity by joining people together instead of realizing that indivisibility is the ever-present spiritual fact because every element of creation is at one with Love. In our efforts to demonstrate concord, if we turn to divine Love as the one all-inclusive Mind, the only cause, right organizations are strengthened and purified.
