Gratitude prompts me to give this expression of thanks for the many blessings I have received in Christian Science. About the time I began school I also entered the Christian Science Sunday School, where I remained until the age of twenty, when I joined the branch Church of Christ, Scientist, of which I am still a member. The truths taught me by the many loving Sunday School teachers were a great help to me all through my school years, in college, and in the armed forces during World War II, as well as during my term as First Reader of this same branch church.
I have had many healings, physical and otherwise, through the study of Christian Science. I found it a constant help and protection during my Army experience. I was sustained and protected for three days while confined to my cot with a severe respiratory trouble, which was undiagnosed. During this time I clung to the fact that I was a member of The Mother Church and as such shared the blessing of all the consecrated work being done by its members throughout the world. This thought quieted my fear of not being able to call on a practitioner, and in three days I arose without any period of convalescence and resumed my duties. I have always appreciated the fact that the captain, who knew I was a Christian Scientist, did not order me to a hospital, but told me to go to my tent and return to work when I felt better.
I was protected through nightly air raids in Naples, Italy, by holding to this verse in the ninety-first Psalm: "A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand; but it shall not come nigh thee." This I applied in thinking of the bombs which fell nearby, and none of our men were touched.
