Before my first visit to a Christian Science Reading Room I wanted to die, but I also wanted to know more about God. Although I had attended an orthodox church and Sunday School since I was a child, I was not satisfied with what I had been taught. How surprised I was when I heard from the loving attendant in the Reading Room that God is man's Life. I had suffered for more than two years with congested lungs and a painful condition of arthritis, which continued to get worse, even under medical care. The coughing was continuous, even while the attendant was telling me of God's loving care for His children.
I borrowed the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and took it home to read. The first chapter, entitled "Prayer," gave me spiritual hope and confidence such as I had never experienced before. I read for hours and then prepared to retire. As I did so, the suggestion came, "Don't forget to take your medicine." But I replied: "This book tells me that God is my healer. I will trust in Him from now on." I had a very restful night.
When I awoke next morning, my first thought was to get to that wonderful textbook; then I realized that I had slept all night without coughing. When I took a full breath without pain, I cried aloud, "Dear God, I am healed; my lungs are well again." It was an instantaneous healing, and it has been permanent.
