GOD'S BESTOWALS

From the September 1953 issue of The Christian Science Journal

"Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning" (James 1: 17). God has already given us all good, and nothing can ever alter this fact. Our human sense of good must be transformed into that divine sense which knows good as spiritual and eternal and all.

God's means and methods of unfolding good are far above, and often far different from, our human conceptions of good; so let us not be impatient if we have to drop our human methods of attaining good and learn to adopt God's ways. We can rest assured that God's will for man is always good, and as we understand this we shall experience blessings without measure, including unplanned glory, success in endeavor, stability, health, and happiness. Mankind are inclined to accept evil as part of their lot, whereas they should refuse to see evil in any form as real and should reject it, for God knows it not. They should learn to accept only the good or true. Nothing but God's purpose for His children will ever bring peace and Satisfaction; so we should not delay the demonstration of His plan.

Someone may ask why so many people seem to have to struggle and toil for all the good they obtain. Is it not because they think of themselves as mortals and not as children of "the Father of lights"? The children of the Father are spiritual ideas, governed by divine Principle. Christian Science reveals that God is not only our Father but also our Mother, as Mary Baker Eddy shows in her revelation of the Science of Christ. This sense of God's divine motherhood is a marvelous bestowal upon mankind, and it is in accord with the Bible, for we read in Isaiah (66: 13), "As one whom his mother comforteth, so will I comfort you." A recognition of God as Father-Mother and of man's relationship to God as His beloved child enables us to appropriate daily and hourly the priceless gifts which this all-wise Parent bestows upon His ideas.
