OUR COLLEGE ORGANIZATIONS

From the September 1953 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Early in the twentieth century our beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, envisioned the great need and vast opportunities for Christian Science Organizations at universities and colleges throughout the world. Mrs. Eddy discerned this need early; but not until it was also recognized by the college students themselves, and the right basis of pure religious purpose and mission acknowledged, did she provide for the establishment of these organizations in the Manual of The Mother Church, under Article XX III, Section 8.

In this authorization she explains, "Members in good standing with The Mother Church, who are members of the faculty, instructors, or students in any university or college, can form and conduct a Christian Science organization at such university or college, provided its rules so permit." Today, not only in the United States, but also in other lands, these Christian Science Organizations are actively carrying forward their mission of presenting the healing message of Christian Science on the college campus and thus helping to fulfill the prophecy of Habakkuk (2:14), "The earth shall be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord, as the waters cover the sea."

These organizations, designed to meet the needs of the college or university community, are distinct from branch Churches of Christ, Scientist, and Christian Science Societies, but possess a similar purpose in that they usually hold weekly testimony meetings conducted by the students and provide Christian Science lectures for the college community. The work of these groups does not replace the work of the churches or Sunday Schools, but complements these activities. While many college students attend nearby services of Churches of Christ, Scientist, or the Christian Science Sunday School, they are nevertheless aware that it is important that they demonstrate healing and growth in their particular university organization.
