THE VALUE OF KNOWING THE TRUTH

From the September 1953 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Truth is changeless, eternal reality. Christian Science shows its students how to discern the truth, enables them to behold the truth in contradistinction to error, reminds them to speak the truth, and requires them to live what they perceive of it. Mary Baker Eddy states in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (pp. 288, 289), "The eternal Truth destroys what mortals seem to have learned from error, and man's real existence as a child of God comes to light."

An acquaintance making an inquiry into Christian Science once said: "I have been brought up in a well-bred family and taught to speak the truth. I cannot say I am well when I feel ill." She was assured that no untruth could possibly be tolerated in Christian Science since its revelation is of divine Truth itself. Then she was asked to suppose herself driving along a western highway and suddenly being questioned by a companion as to how much farther she thought she could go with so much water on the pavement ahead. Would she retrace her way or detour because of what her eyes agreed to, or would she resort to her instructed intelligence, reassure her companion, and drive straight on, finding the mirage receding before her? Which was truth? The wet pavement or the knowledge of the actual situation? Was it the appearance of a material symptom of interference or the clear right of way?

It was explained that Christian Science teaches how to distinguish between false presentation and reality. And it answers the question, "What do you mean by reality?" by saying that that which is real is eternal. Only good, or that which derives from God, is eternal. Therefore the thought or evidence that is of Spirit is eternal, or real. If it is not of God, it is not real in the sense of actual, eternal fact, or truth.
