Gratitude for more than thirty years of protection and guidance through Christian Science prompts me to submit this testimony. As a boy I thought the healings related in the Bible were very natural, and I could not understand why sickness could not be healed by prayer, as Jesus taught. Therefore I was greatly interested many years later when a young man in my office told me of a remarkable healing he had received through Christian Science.
I procured the textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, and after reading the first chapter I knew that I had found a real explanation of healing prayer and that all sickness could be healed by praying aright. Very soon I witnessed beautiful proofs of the healing power of Christian Science, and many more followed in later years. One of these healings I want to relate because it is still of much help to me and may be to others as well.
For many months I had been suffering from stomach trouble and several times a day was in great pain. Various kinds of food disagreed with me, and I grew thinner and thinner. My family and I were planning a trip on an ocean steamer, and I felt that if I were not healed I would spoil the pleasure of the trip for them. On the day of our embarkation I felt very weak and knew that I had to take a firm stand to destroy the difficulty. On my way to the steamer I remembered that Mrs. Eddy says (Science and Health, p. 129), "If you wish to know the spiritual fact, you can discover it by reversing the material fable, be the fable pro or con,—be it in accord with your preconceptions or utterly contrary to them." From this I inferred that I could obey the truth by disobeying the suggestions of error, or mortal mind. I decided, therefore, to act contrary to any suggestion of mortal mind.
