Christian Science came to me through...

From the October 1954 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Christian Science came to me through a dear friend, who invited me to attend a Wednesday evening testimony meeting in a Church of Christ, Scientist. This was during the depression, when my husband was without a job and our supply was very limited. One morning after I had taken up the study of Christian Science and learned of man's unity with God, my husband was paying the milk bill. During his conversation with the milkman he was asked if he knew how to farm, and he replied that he did. The milkman then offered to furnish us with stock and equipment, if we would rent a farm. This offer seemed like a dream. We rented a farm and moved there right away.

We had many trying experiences on the farm, but through faith in good we overcame every difficulty. We learned that, as Mrs. Eddy tells us in Science and Health (p. 410), "Every trial of our faith in God makes us stronger." The need for help on the farm was lovingly met when I turned to God in prayer and gratitude, knowing that His child cannot lack any good thing. After the harmonious birth of our third child my husband obtained other employment, and we were led to buy a small place of our own. We progressed in spiritual understanding, and now have a better home.

I have witnessed the fruitful growing of a garden during a season of drought. Hymn No. 97 in our Christian Science Hymnal was of much help to me at this time. I went to the garden each morning and silently knew that God is ever with us, supplying our every need. I also knew that showers of blessings are ever falling about us and that we surely could rejoice. This hymn was also a great help to us one year when it appeared that too much rain would ruin the crops. We proved that such damage, can be avoided when we turn to God. Mrs. Eddy tells us (Science and Health, p. 60), "Soul has infinite resources with which to bless mankind, and happiness would be more readily attained and would be more secure in our keeping, if sought in Soul."
