CONTINUAL NEWNESS

From the October 1954 issue of The Christian Science Journal

What great evidence of newness bursts forth in the springtime! Then all nature awakens to express the beauty and loveliness for which it was created. The reality of Life is seen in such affluence, as to sweep away all appearance, of decay and death. Newness is actually spiritual, although the human senses may view it as material. Newness expresses God, divine Principle, who creates all in and of Himself and never can in any way be connected with matter. The divine qualities of beauty, purity, perfection, and stability are eternal, unspoiled by blight: or blemish. The beauty of nature typifies the beauty of holiness, the substance of which does not pass away, but ever increases in loveliness.

Spiritualization of consciousness constitutes the new birth, which comes to individuals as they awaken from the dream of material sense. They begin to recognize Spirit, God, as All-in-all, and to see that He is not corporcal, but is infinite Mind, Life, and Love. Man as His likeness or expression is also not confined to matter, but spiritually reflects his Maker. Spiritual ideas are revealed by the Christ, and Paul said (II Cor.5:17), "If any man be, in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away: behold, all things are become new."

The subject of the new birth has been greatly illuminated through the teachings of Christian Science. It does not take place all at once, but is a gradual putting off of the old man—the mortal belief of life in matter, its beginning may seem great indeed, and even take the form of a physical healing which is complete, and which frees the individual from whatever claim appears to be binding him. There must be however, continual unfolding through prayer and spiritual growth.
