UNDERSTANDING THE SCIENTIFIC MAN

From the October 1954 issue of The Christian Science Journal

In "Unity of Good" Mary Baker Eddy makes this interesting statement (p. 46): "We do not see much of the real man here, for he is God's man; while ours is man's man." She adds in the next paragraph. "The scientific man and his Maker are here; and you would be none other than this man, if you would subordinate the fleshly perceptions to the spiritual sense and source of being." Such a positive statement of the present perfection of man, and of a method to demonstrate this state of being, is worthy of careful consideration.

To understand the scientific man we must carefully study his origin as described in the first chapter of Genesis: "So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them. And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth." Thus we see that man, imaging forth all the qualities of God, is blessed. Since he was given power to be fruitful and multiply, he can manifest only good. He was given dominion, which is to say that he is empowered of God above all living things, subordinate to Him only.

Through the study of Christian Science we learn that Christ Jesus saw man in all his spiritual and original perfection. When he declared (John 10:30). "I and my Father are one," he realized that his true spiritual being was one with God, and the proof of this was his healing and saving work. To those believing and understanding his message he further declared (John 14:12), "He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto m Father." These greater works are the signs which are following the understanding of Christian Science today. Students of this Science study to understand God and man's relationship to Him. As the truth appears they gain a realization of their individual, unchanging nature as the male and female of God's creating. This precious understanding is bringing healing to mankind today as it, did in Jesus' time.
