PEACE THROUGH CHRIST

From the March 1954 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Deep within the heart of men is a great yearning for peace. Yet generations ago Christ Jesus said (John 14:27), "Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you." But there is great significance in what he had to say regarding this peace, for he declared it was not given "as the world giveth."

For centuries mankind not only has sought peace between nations, but has felt at times that it stood on the very threshold of its appearance. Because, however, peace has been sought largely in the material methods devised by mankind, it has continued to remain ineffective. While some progress has been made through honest endeavors to establish the brotherhood of men and the freedom of nations, the fact remains that today a confused and faltering world is still seeking peace.

Since nations are faced with profound decisions at home and with others in the international field, is it not time for them to turn more wholeheartedly to God, permitting Him to define peace and to lead mankind into the paths where it may be found? The Bible is filled with recipes for peace and rules which are to be followed if men are to obtain it. Mary Baker Eddy discerned their spiritual import and urged mankind to turn from matter to Spirit for the answer to its problems, that it might receive the peace which the Christ bestows.
