When Mary Baker Eddy established the Christian Science Sunday School, it became an integral part of the Church of Christ, Scientist. Therefore, instead of being an activity and responsibility limited to teachers and officers of the Sunday School, it affords an opportunity for every church member to share in some degree in this vital work. One of the most fundamental ways in which all church members may aid is to stop negative thinking and talking about the measure of progress being made. Mrs. Eddy recommends this in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" where she writes (p. 40), "Remove error from thought, and it will not appear in effect." The suggestions of the possibility of a decrease in enrollment, decreased attendance, and lack of interest are mortal mind arguments which would make us believe that one of the most important activities of the Christian Science movement can be limited in some way.
These suggestions are nullified and silenced by our steadfast realization of the infinite, controlling power of God as good. The child thought is naturally drawn to good and cannot be separated from it by any claim of materiality, for the law of spiritual attraction is ever present and ever operative. When we as church members clear from our thought the false concepts of retrogression and stagnation and replace them with the expectation and conviction that spiritual growth is being manifested, the way is opened for increased progress in the Sunday School. Right activity knows no diminution, only progressive unfoldment and spiritual advancement.
Another way in which one may help is by extending a loving welcome to the children who enter the Sunday School from non-Christian Science homes. Attracting these children to our Sunday School, where they acquire a firm foundation for spiritual development, is an important part of our missionary work as Christian Scientists. Christ Jesus said, in referring to the little ones who gathered around him (Matt. 18:5), "Whoso shall receive one such little child in my name receiveth me."
