In answer to the question, "If Christian Science is the same as Jesus taught, why is it not more simple, so that all can readily understand it?" Mary Baker Eddy says (Miscellaneous Writings, pp. 53, 54): "The teachings of Jesus were simple; and yet he found it difficult to make the rulers understand, because of their great lack of spirituality. Christian Science is simple, and readily understood by the children; only the thought educated away from it finds it abstract or difficult to perceive. Its seeming abstraction is the mystery of godliness; and godliness is simple to the godly; but to the unspiritual, the ungodly, it is dark and difficult. The carnal mind cannot discern spiritual things."
The substance of Christian Science is profound and sublime, yet very simple. The word simple means readily comprehended; it also means straightforward and sincere. Then regardless of age or academic training adherents of this Science can ensure progress in their understanding of it by study and practice.
Part of Mrs. Eddy's answer to the question, "How can I progress most rapidly in the understanding of Christian Science?" reads: "Study thoroughly the letter and imbibe the spirit. Adhere to the divine Principle of Christian Science and follow the behests of God, abiding steadfastly in wisdom, Truth, and Love" (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 495). The entire answer is well worth careful perusal. It points out, among other things, that we must obey God, have one Mind, and love our neighbor as ourself. We must also know Him as Life and must live the life that demonstrates Truth and Love.
