Man lives, moves, and has his being by virtue of divine law. To become aware of the fact of the supremacy and ever-presence of spiritual law, the law of God, Life, Truth, and Love, sets one's feet on the pathway which leads to the greatest possibilities and the highest achievements. The way of understanding man's God-given dominion enables mankind to prove that the so-called material laws, which claim to limit and harass them, are in reality not laws at all but only accepted formulated beliefs. Paul enunciated the supremacy of spiritual law thus (Rom. 8:2): "The law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death." Mary Baker Eddy in her "Miscellaneous Writings" avers (p. 200), "The foundational facts of Christian Science are gathered from the supremacy of spiritual law and its antagonism to every supposed material law."
When we contemplate physical or material law, such as, for instance, the law of gravity, we are apt to think of the force which matter seems to exert on matter. But the potency of spiritual law is not of that nature. The ever-present spiritual law of Life, Truth, and Love is unopposed, and when understood and demonstrated it always operates to the exclusion of error as light excludes darkness.
To a mistaken and unreal sense of existence, however, there appear to be laws that cause sickness, lack, limitation, discord, ill fortune—evil forces, involving fear, anxiety, distress. But Christian Science shows and demonstrates that these so-called laws seem to have power only in the degree that mortal thought acquiesces in them. Their apparent but unreal power ceases in proportion as one denies them power and reality and realizes the ever-presence of the only real law, the spiritual law of Life, Truth, and Love.
