THE MIGHT OF GENTLENESS

From the March 1954 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Christian Science has made known to the world the great truth that spiritually scientific thinking is a mighty power in the universe, since it is based on the only real and actual power, divine Mind. The Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, tells us (p. 559), "The 'still, small voice' of scientific thought reaches over continent and ocean to the globe's remotest bound."

Thought needs no chariot whereby to mount up to heaven or to go across oceans. To hear God's voice in the stillness of pure thought, the material senses must be silenced. In order for us to be aware of the graces of Spirit, the gentleness of Love, anger and all mortal passions must be stilled. Is this not why the Bible says (Ps. 46:10), "Be still, and know that I am God"? To reflect and so embody divine intelligence, mere material intellectuality with its pride and self-assertion must withdraw.

Christian Science has also brought to light the great fact of infinite comfort that only divine thoughts are real and actual and that material thoughts, which appear to proceed from the brain, are not thoughts, but suggestions. Hence all evil thinking is mindless and powerless. Its seeming power is derived from human faith in and fear of what has actually no life, no power. It can be likened to a pair of bellows, which are motionless until manipulated by human hands. Adam had breathed into him the breath, or semblance, of life. The Adam-race will no longer parade as man when we cease to give it reality and stop breathing into it the breath of life. Seeing and knowing the spiritual fact of Mind's power, we prove that "one on God's side is a majority." One clear thought of the omnipotence of God can save a city or prevent a disaster.
