REVERSING FALSE TESTIMONY

From the March 1954 issue of The Christian Science Journal

According to the Holy Bible (II cor. 4:18), "The things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal." Effective Christian Science treatment deals with the things which are eternal, the things of Spirit, God. Temporal things, by the very reason of their temporary and unspiritual nature, are unknown to God and have no power to heal. Neither does God, who is almighty, require assistance from any temporary means or measures.

In the process of spiritualizing human consciousness, however, temporal things can serve a useful purpose if we learn to reverse their false evidence. In our textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mary Baker Eddy points out (p. 120), "Science reverses the false testimony of the physical senses, and by this reversal mortals arrive at the fundamental facts of being."

Students of journalism are sometimes taught to check their news stories by what are known as the "five W's": Who what, when, where, and why. In other words, a complete news story should tell who is involved, what happened, when it happened, where it happened, and why or how it happened. These "five W's" can, by reversal, help the student of Christian Science in his metaphysical task of differentiating between the clamoring evidence of the mortal senses and the still small voice of Truth, always ready to testify to the eternal things of God.
