THE LIVING PRESENT

From the March 1954 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The Psalmist experienced many of the trials which confront men today. But he also gained a clear recognition of God's ever-present power. In an inspired moment he uttered these words (Ps. 139:7—10): "Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence? If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there. . . . If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea; even there shall thy hand lead me, and thy right hand shall hold me." Thus he indicated the ever-present and immediate availability of divine Love to guide men in safety and to meet all of their needs, wherever they may be.

In her textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mary Baker Eddy assures us of the abundant blessings ever available to those who lean upon the sustaining power of divine Love. She also writes (p. 39), "'Now,' cried the apostle, 'is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation,'—meaning, not that now men must prepare for a future-world salvation, or safety, but that now is the time in which to experience that salvation in spirit and in life."

During his Christian ministry Jesus made many glorious promises to all his followers. He said that those who hunger and thirst after righteousness will be filled; that those who stand firm in the understanding of his mission will do the works which he did; that the pure in heart will see God; and that those who understand God and His Christ aright will never see death but will enjoy eternal life. He placed no limits on the fulfillment of these promises. In fact, he said that the kingdom of heaven is at hand and, indeed, is within us now. Therefore obedience to his teachings brings immediate fulfillment of his promises and present enjoyment of the blessings.
