An overwhelming sense of gratitude for having been awakened to the great power of good in the Bible prompts this testimony. I had studied the Bible in an orthodox Sunday School from the time I was a child; but in my late teens I decided there was no proof that it meant more than any other book, for I did not feel convinced that God was anything more than a fable.
Then I visited an aunt who was a student of Christian Science. While in her home I was attacked by weakness and fainting spells which resulted from intense periodic pains and which had been hampering my normal activities for some time. I was also suffering from a long-standing hip trouble that had made one leg shorter than the other. I felt doomed to be different from other people and quite useless. My aunt told me that this was not necessary and introduced me to a Christian Science practitioner. I explained to her about the hip trouble and the fainting spells. After asking me a few questions she told me to think of God as good and All, and she said that she would give me a silent treatment. This seemed strange to me, but having gone this far. I decided to be obedient. It proved a most exalting experience, for I left the room free from all sense of heaviness and dread of the future.
I borrowed a copy of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, which I studied in secret because my parents had always ridiculed Christian Science. As a result of my study I was inspired with such a deep faith in God, good, that the weakness and fainting spells disappeared, and in time both of my legs became the same length. In addition, a goiter disappeared while I was studying Science and Health. These healings were final proof to me that matter is but a human concept. Mrs. Eddy writes in Science and Health (p. 162), "Experiments have favored the fact that Mind governs the body, not in one instance, but in every instance."
