"THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD"

From the September 1954 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Our international daily newspaper, The Christian Science Monitor, is an important instrument for good in the world. It needs to be circulated and read more generally and to be better understood even by those who do subscribe for and read it.

In establishing the Monitor, Mary Baker Eddy saw the necessity of illustrating the truth she had discovered in its application to the ordinary affairs of men, in addition to the need of demonstrating it in healing the sick and reforming the sinner. She perceived that making this truth practical in dealing with news could be done only by those who were experienced in living and thinking in terms of spiritual reality, and that the Christian Scientists were in a peculiarly advantageous position to undertake the publication of a daily newspaper which would make practical Christianity in action apparent.

There is a correlation between the understanding of God and every human expression of morality, decency, fairness, justice, and truthfulness. When one understands the true character of God, in Science, he necessarily expresses that character in proportion to his degree of understanding. It is of more than ordinary significance, therefore, that our Leader chose the newspaper field in which to carry on a missionary endeavor on behalf of heartsick humanity. The Monitor is more than just a newspaper. It is The Christian Science Monitor, established by the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, Mrs. Eddy. Its religious purpose distinguishes it from other news publications.
