MAN LIVES IN GOD

From the September 1954 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Throughout the years, with varying intensity, men have voiced the question, "Where is God?" and particularly when they have been confronted by some distress that human efforts have been unable to alleviate. They have sought Him through paths of dogma and down blind alleys of specious reasoning, but often the search has been motivated by a desire to localize the infinite, to humanize the divine; and therefore it has been, in the main, unsuccessful.

In 1866 Mary Baker Eddy discovered Christian Science, and in 1875 she published her discovery in the textbook, now entitled "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures." The Bible was her only manual of instruction; here, in the teachings of prophets and apostles, and especially in those of Christ Jesus, she found the confirmation of her revelation of God as All-in-all and of man as His idea, inseparable from Him. In the textbook she writes (p. 287): "God being everywhere and all-inclusive, how can He be absent or suggest the absence of omnipresence and omnipotence? How can there be more than all?"

In the clarity of this definition of God's omnipresence, how logical is the Apostle Paul's statement of man's real and only dwelling place (Acts 17:28), "In him we live, and move, and have our being." Man's activities, then, his very existence, take place only in Spirit, not in matter; they are not conditional upon material beliefs, which are the suppositional opposites of spiritual facts. The real man's life is not bounded by time —it is compassed by infinity—and his identity can no more be clarified by birth than it can be obscured by death. The Bible states unequivocally in the first chapter of Genesis that God made man in His own image and likeness; therefore he must be perfect, forever reflecting the spiritual individuality of his creator.
