Testimonies of Healing

At one of the first Wednesday testimony...

From the September 1954 issue of The Christian Science Journal

At one of the first Wednesday testimony meetings I attended in a Church of Christ, Scientist, I was startled to hear a woman say that through her study of Christian Science the Bible had become her daily companion and that whenever she had any decision to make she always turned to the Bible for guidance. While employed in an office in the north of England I was asked if I would like to go to South America with a friend who was returning to her work there. This step meant leaving my home and relatives, giving up my position, and seeking new employment in a strange land. When the time came for me to give my decision, I remembered the testimony I have mentioned. I prayed for divine guidance and opened my Bible to this verse (Ezra 10:4): "Arise; for this matter belongeth unto thee; ... be of good courage and do it."

I knew that I had my answer, and I made my decision to go. Although I met with opposition from friends and others, who thought it unwise to make this change, I kept the Bible message in thought and never doubted its guidance. Since then my whole life has changed to one of joyous activity through the study of Christian Science. I was soon employed with one of the largest commercial firms in South America, and this work proved very harmonious during my six-year stay there. Also I was privileged to take an active part in the work of a small group of Christian Scientists and soon rejoiced in becoming a member of The Mother Church. I met my future husband in South America, and since returning to England in 1929 we have proved that Christian Science meets all our needs.

When our daughter was born, we relied absolutely on the Lord's Prayer and its spiritual interpretation, given by Mrs. Eddy (Science and Health, pp. 16, 17). The birth was harmonious, without any medical aid. Another proof of the healing power of the Lord's Prayer was given to us when our daughter was about eight years old. One night she became very unwell, and in the morning I found it necessary to ask help from a Christian Science practitioner. During the day she became worse, and the thought came to me that I must just leave her in God's care. I went downstairs and repeated the Lord's Prayer with its spiritual interpretation. Then I realized that she was God's child and had always been in the care of her Father-Mother God. This calmed me, and I went about my household duties. In about two hours I heard our daughter call me and found her bouncing about on the bed and asking for something to eat. She was completely healed.
