My active interest in Christian Science...

From the November 1955 issue of The Christian Science Journal

My active interest in Christian Science was aroused when a friend of mine was healed of heart trouble in just two weeks. The day-to-day change in her condition was so remarkable that I would have found it difficult to believe had I not witnessed it. I had never opened the textbook, Science and Health by Mary Baker Eddy, although it had been in our home for about eight years. Now I was ready and anxious to read it.

My first healing was of an abscessed tooth after the dentist stated that it would be impossible to save it. I was very new in Science, but I felt sure that it should not be necessary for me to lose the tooth. Therefore I refused to let the dentist extract it, but at his request I consented to return the following day. That night I called a Christian Science practitioner. I shall never forget the confidence with which she assured me that I did not have to lose the tooth. She said she would work for me that night. The following day when the dentist looked at the tooth he gave a long whistle and said, "What a wonderful thing you didn't let me pull it out as I wanted to do!"

At another time I came home from the office with all the symptoms of influenza. I felt too ill to bother getting into bed and just threw myself across the top of it. Breathing was very difficult. My father came in and said he would call a practitioner. While I was lying there feeling very miserable, all of a sudden it was as though someone had lifted a weight off my chest, and I drew a long breath of relief. Without knowing just why I did it, I sat up and looked at the clock. About ten minutes later my father came and told me that he had called the practitioner and that she had said she would do some work for me right away. When I asked him how long ago he had spoken with her, he said it was about ten minutes. It had been an instantaneous healing. I was back in the office the next day, perfectly free.
