THE SERENITY OF SPIRIT

From the November 1955 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The secret of serenity lies in the understanding of man's oneness, or unity, with God, Spirit, the one infinite intelligence. The glorious truth that man lives in God, embraced in divine all-encompassing Love, gives one unassailable assurance and poise.

Christian Science teaches that serenity is a spiritual quality, God-derived. It is not dependent upon material conditions, but inheres in Soul, God. Man, as the spiritual image and likeness of God, expresses unchanging calm in unlimited measure. Each individual has the opportunity of recognizing and utilizing this spiritual truth in his daily experience.

In her book entitled "No and Yes" Mary Baker Eddy writes (p. 26), "God holds man in the eternal bonds of Science,—in the immutable harmony of divine law." To understand that man lives by divine authority lifts thought above the precariousness of material existence to behold Life as God. No element of chance or uncertainty can mar Life's perfection, because Life is in its true nature eternally good. Man reflects Life as naturally as a sunbeam reflects the sun. He is consciously at one with Life and consequently knows no insecurity or unhappiness. This Science teaches us how to reject false gods, false beliefs, and false material individuality. It plants our feet firmly in the path leading to the realm of Spirit. As we pursue this path we gain an increasing consciousness of man's rich and abundant inheritance. We see that the child of God, held in the immutable harmony of divine law, knows no lack. He is in possession of all that God gives.
