PEACE OF MIND, THE KEY TO TRUE HAPPINESS

From the November 1955 issue of The Christian Science Journal

True happiness is unattainable without peace of mind. Yet how often mortals fail to recognize this fact as they humanly strive to surround themselves with evidences of good. We might ask ourselves, "What are we searching for in our day-to-day living?" The answer might be, "A pleasant and harmonious home, a successful business, physical and mental health, the joy of family and friends." Human reasoning may argue that when these objectives are realized in our experience, we shall be happy. Why is it, then, that some individuals, possessing all of these things, still are unhappy, confused, and fearful; while others, who may have very little of the world's goods, are happy and serene? The answer is that unless we possess peace of mind, all these things are to no avail and are but the husks of materiality.

The most successful man the world has ever known gave to mankind the key to true happiness when he said (Matt. 6:33), "Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you." These are the words of the Prince of Peace, Christ Jesus. What is this kingdom of God which confers peace of mind? It is the consciousness of the presence of God, good, at all times and in all places. It is the recognition and acceptance of our true identity as the reflection or idea of the one perfect Mind, God, and the consequent manifestation of these unchangeable truths in our experience.

Peace of mind is not gained through an ivory tower attitude of aloofness or an ostrich attitude, which attempts to hide from evil or to ignore it. This is not the method of Christian Science, the Science of Mind. Rather, the method of this Science is to combat and to counteract the voice of evil by our calmly knowing that the power of Truth is always at our side to change a gloomy verdict into a song of freedom. Peace of mind results from the consciousness that the infinite love of our heavenly Father, divine Love, can dissolve into nothingness any fear, doubt, or insecurity, no matter how big and foreboding it claims to be.
