When the science of numbers is conscientiously studied and sound methods of applying its rules are used, the right answer to a problem in mathematics is inevitable. There may be mistakes made in the process, and there may be considerable time spent in correcting the mistakes, but the worker need never accept frustration. Out of his study and practice, the mathematician convinces himself that he can find the right answer to his problem.
Mankind have been trying for centuries to find the right answer to the problem of being. Because they have not approached this problem scientifically—for instance, as if it were a problem in mathematics—their efforts have often been without success. Hence many have faltered and have accepted the frustration which comes when evil is believed inescapable. Our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, explains the cause of this frustration in her book "Unity of Good" (p. 9): "The talent and genius of the centuries have wrongly reckoned. They have not based upon revelation their arguments and conclusions as to the source and resources of being,—its combinations, phenomena, and outcome,—but have built instead upon the sand of human reason. They have not accepted the simple teaching and life of Jesus as the only true solution of the perplexing problem of human existence."
Because it does accept the teaching and life of Jesus as the only true solution, Christian Science presents the means whereby mankind may solve the problem of being. It presents the Science of Christ, which the Master lived. Jesus admonished (John 8:32), "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." In line with our comparison with mathematics, we may very well say that the true and right way of reckoning when one is confronted with the problems of life is found in the understanding of Christian Science, the infinite divine calculus. This Science is always available; but human thought must be prepared to accept it and honestly willing to abide by the answers it supplies.
