THE SOUND IN THE MULBERRY TREES

From the June 1955 issue of The Christian Science Journal

"Incline your ear, and come unto me: hear, and your soul shall live," writes the prophet Isaiah (55:3).

During many centuries men have been inspired, through the spiritual teachings of the Bible, to draw near to God, to seek His guidance, to listen for His voice. In the degree that they have understood and obeyed His divine direction, they have experienced harmonious results in protection, healing, and countless blessings.

In the fifth chapter of II Samuel is found an account of the art of listening in David's time. It shows us that the dependence upon God's direction and the faith in that guidance were strong in the spiritually-minded, who relied upon wisdom and intelligence derived from God. We read that when David inquired of the Lord as to how he should go to meet the Philistines in battle, he was told (verse 24), "When thou hearest the sound of a going in the tops of the mulberry trees, . . . then thou shalt bestir thyself: for then shall the Lord go out before thee, to smite the host of the Philistines." The Bible account continues, "David did so, as the Lord had commanded him; and smote the Philistines."
