Every sincere Christian Scientist aspires to become an instantaneous healer. This creditable ambition can be realized, however, only as the metaphysician demonstrates man's oneness, or unity, with divine Love, the direct source of all spiritual power. A mere intellectual smattering of Christian Science theory or a formulated application of the letter of Science is inadequate to reach the mental heights so naturally and unlaboriously enjoyed by Love's idea. Infinitely above man-made ritual, creed, or ceremony, a spiritual sense of Love brings immediate healing and adjustment to mortal problems, whereas no such result could be achieved by the uninspired, stereotyped methods of the human mind. To gain spiritual conviction and assurance, the Love which is God must be felt in our hearts. This spiritually inspiring experience lifts thought to behold God's allness and the nothingness of that which would oppose Him.
In the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, the author consistently unites instantaneous healing with an inspired recognition of Love. Clearly realizing that an unselfed, heartfelt expression of this universal Love finds human fulfillment in healing and release from bondage, Mrs. Eddy makes the following plea in her book "Miscellaneous Writings" (p. 312): "Oh, may the love that is talked, be felt! and so lived, that when weighed in the scale of God we be not found wanting." The ability to heal instantly is found wanting if an instinctive feeling concerning Love's ever-presence and omnipotence be lacking.
How can one who is struggling with a sense of discouragement, grief, or physical discord approximate the glorious feeling of Love's all-embracing presence, that holy state of consciousness which brings complete liberation from these mortal errors? How is it possible to become permeated with that divine, healing affection which, from the standpoint of human suffering and despair, seems far removed from the present experience? First, let it be remembered that infinite Love is never separated from its cherished idea, never absent to that spiritual sense which claims eternal oneness with God and which alone demonstrates the law of universal harmony. However, until the student's progress has become such that time is no longer an element in the attainment of this holy realization, his mental advancement may begin with the letter of Christian Science.
