In 1934 I was in a state of discouragement and desperation over my financial condition. After I had exhausted every material means, I turned humbly to God for help and guidance. God heard my prayer, for a little later an acquaintance told me of Christian Science and of how God could help me.
After I began the study of the Lesson-Sermons in the Christian Science Quarterly I realized that my habits of smoking and drinking were not in keeping with what I was studying and striving to practice. Although I had smoked for many years, I took the cigars, pipe, and tobacco pouch out of my pocket and said, "I guess I'm through with you." I could see that either the smoking habit or the spiritual progress I desired had to be given up, and I knew that I could not give up my progress in this wonderful, uplifting, healing truth. This sincere desire for righteousness brought about the healing, and I have never smoked since.
However, the heavy drinking habit continued until I called on a practitioner and asked him to help me. He told me what Mary Baker Eddy says about drinking and gave me a treatment. Since that morning in 1934 I have not desired nor touched a drop of liquor.
