WHOM SHALL WE CHOOSE?

From the September 1955 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Members of Churches of Christ, Scientist, are frequently faced with the question of whom to choose for some particular church work. It is important that a right choice be made, because if the newly appointed one is qualified for his task, his work will benefit the entire church and forward his own spiritual growth. It is well to remember that a church's progress is in proportion to the individual spiritual progress of its members. And church work, because it is in the service of our Maker and mankind, promotes spiritual understanding.

It is comforting to know that in reality it is God who appoints His messengers. And we can rest assured that the all-knowing perfect Mind never makes a mistake. As Mary Baker Eddy says in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 455): "The All-wise does not bestow His highest trusts upon the unworthy. When He commissions a messenger, it is one who is spiritually near Himself." Thus we can accept as our task the discernment of God's guidance and obedience to His will as the basis for choosing our workers wisely.

All Churches of Christ, Scientist, are branches of The Mother Church, which through its activities exemplifies the mother-love of God. This love with its merciful, all-embracing tenderness should shine through all church work and inspire right decisions when new workers are to be chosen. The Bible alludes to the impartial love of God in these words (Acts 10:34): "God is no respecter of persons." Realizing this truth, we shall be happy to give every church member opportunity to work for our Cause.
