TRUE VISION OF ONE'S TASKS

From the September 1955 issue of The Christian Science Journal

When one has the high goal before his thought, his tasks are less arduous, his state of mind much happier and freer, and his accomplishments greater. Without this vision, work may become monotonous, boresome, mediocre, and perhaps finally a failure.

What is this high goal? Does it vary with the type of work one is called upon to do? It would not seem that it does, for essentially all true business is God's business, and the true and high goal is the glorification of God in one's daily life. Work well done glorifies God in that it points to a small manifestation of His order and intelligence and love. To the extent that one dwells upon spiritual facts and is obedient to Truth, he is successful and his life is fruitful and a blessing to all.

There are times, perhaps, when one is tempted to think that his work is unappealing, unattractive, or tiresome; that it offers no opportunities; that there is no appreciation of his efforts and no willingness on the part of anyone to see anything worthy about what he is doing. Then would be a time when one should ask himself, "Am I working solely for personal and selfish reasons, to be seen or heard of men, or am I praying and desiring to make my contribution acceptable in God's sight?"
