"Life is real, and death is the illusion." This concise statement concerning one of the most difficult problems confronting humanity is found on page 428 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. A realization of the profound truth of this statement brings about a transformation in the life of anyone who accepts it wholeheartedly. It destroys the fear of the last enemy, and thus gives fresh inspiration to all right human purposes. It also reveals the grand truth that because God is the only real Life and man is made in His likeness, our real immortal life is going on now. This is demonstrable through Christian Science.
In the second chapter of the epistle to the Hebrews, the writer speaks of the deliverance which Christ Jesus brought to those who through fear of death were "all their lifetime subject to bondage." To such as these today, the teachings of Christian Science give a wonderful message of comfort and release, founded on demonstrable truth, on the great fact of man's inseparability from God, who alone is Life and Love, and who is All-in-all.
Mrs. Eddy proved through her own experience that "Life is real, and death is the illusion." When, as the result of an injury which was due to a fall on the ice, she was said to be entering the "valley of the shadow of death" (Ps. 23:4), she turned to her Bible and received such a glorious realization of God as ever-present Life that she was instantaneously healed.
