Many times I have felt I should express by means of our periodicals my deep gratitude to our heavenly Father for the wonderful and manifold blessings I have received through the study of Christian Science.
In 1896 I was suffering from a condition which the doctors had pronounced incurable. A friend who had been healed both mentally and physically through Christian Science often visited me. One day when she called to see me, I was in despair, and I asked her to tell me about her experience in getting well. She did so, and her words gave me such hope and courage that I wanted to read the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, which my friend said had healed many who had read it.
She loaned me her copy of Science and Health. After I had read it for a while, I wanted to own a copy of my own, but I had no money with which to buy one. However, my friend also gave me a Journal, and I read in it of financial difficulties overcome through Science. One writer in particular said that her need was supplied when she realized that, as Mrs. Eddy says (Science and Health, p. 494), "Divine Love always has met and always will meet every human need." I tried to know that divine Love would enable me to get the textbook. A few days later I was asked if I wished to sell a particular dress. I was willing to let it go, and the money I received was just enough to pay for the textbook. In a short time I owned the precious volume.
