Enlightened Faith

From the July 1956 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Is faith credulity, a tower
Built on air, a daydream
To console the trustful, circumvent despair?
No. Faith is not a set of blinkers,
Leading human thought to dogma
And destruction. Reliance comes
From firm conviction, and this in turn
From expectation after trial,
Unprejudiced observation
And dispassionate application
Of divine power.
Faith is not a fetish, but a flagstone.
