THE HEALING POWER OF HUMILITY

From the July 1956 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Christian Science brings to light the unchallengeable spiritual power, dignity, and grace of true humility. Healing power was unmistakably shown by Christ Jesus to be a reflected, divine ability, not a personal possession. For did he not utterly disown any personal credit for his glorious work? "I can of mine own self do nothing," he acknowledged (John 5:30). At another time, with utmost simplicity he acclaimed the mighty cause from which his healing prowess was derived. He said (John 14: 10), "The Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works." In deep humility, knowing man as the pure reflection of perfect, omnipotent Mind, the Master gave all glory and honor to God alone. Because his consciousness held no sense of mortal egotism, he was a clear transparency for Truth. Unhampered by pride or self-pity, by self-seeking or self-will, our great Way-shower continued his upward way of demonstration. It was true humility which gave him dominion. Thus he experienced no fluctuations in his wondrous career. Because he recognized himself as in reality God's perfect reflection, his works naturally and inevitably increased in magnitude.

Following in the upward mental pathway of our truly meek Way-shower, we find in Christian Science that healing becomes certain and instantaneous as we put on the garment of humility. This Christly garment is woven with threads of praise and glory to God for His allness almightiness and for man's sonship with Him. This garment of meekness is also one of might, for shall not the meek "inherit the earth" (Matt. 5:5)? The weight of heaviness or of fearful or inactive submission to the claims of sickness, sin, danger, or other discords is cast out by the radiant activity of meekness. Victory over passive or apprehensive subordination to evil is assured as we humbly receive and maintain the life-giving truths of Christian Science.

It is through humility that we discern God to be All, the only creator, the one Mind, the only I or Us. It is through humility that we really discover man to be reflection, or idea, the perfect likeness of the Divine Being, unquenchable Love. The mesmeric suggestions of so-called mortal laws falsely believed to govern man and the universe are uncovered and destroyed by the humility which acknowledges God to be the only source and author of all that really exists. It takes humility to set aside the erring sense of mortal selfhood and joyously to acknowledge divine Love's harmonious control of every detail of its own spiritual, perfect creation.
