Testimonies of Healing

"Sing unto the Lord, all the earth; shew...

From the May 1957 issue of The Christian Science Journal

"Sing unto the Lord, all the earth; shew forth from day to day his salvation. Declare his glory among the heathen; his marvellous works among all nations" (I Chron. 16:23, 24). Through the provision of our beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, in establishing our periodicals we may indeed declare God's "marvellous works among all nations." We may well consider it an expression of love to all mankind to share with them our experiences of healing and regeneration.

It was my privilege to attend the Christian Science Sunday School for a few years before reaching the age of twenty. I am deeply grateful for the seed sown during these years. In the years since then Christian Science has met my every need—physical, mental, moral, and spiritual. It has been an unfailing protection in rearing our family.

At a time when our two children, my husband, and I were traveling through the desert at night, we became aware of a short circuit in the wiring of the car. My husband felt safe in continuing, but I felt the need of prayerful protective work, which I immediately began in earnest. Before long the motor began to lose power and gradually came to a complete stop. On getting out, we discovered that the rear of the car was in flames.

Everything my husband tried to do to extinguish the flames was useless. I knew that Christian Science never fails, and that if I could not prove that truth in this instance, it would be due to lack of understanding. As I thought of all the marvelous works being performed all over the world through the love and understanding of students of Christian Science, I knew full well that harmony could be established, even in a case like this. I was lost to all else in this reasoning.

At this point a truck, the first automobile that had come along, stopped, and the driver rushed to our assistance, telling us to throw sand on the flames. We all joined in the work, and in a few minutes the flames died out. The method used was familiar to our benefactor but not to us. He towed us to the only garage he knew to be open at that time of night. The time it took to make repairs was short, and the cost was low. Little damage was done to our car and possessions. Divine Love had met our need.

At another time while my husband and I were hiking to a beautiful lake four miles above our camp, I injured an ankle badly. The pain was extreme, and through my tears I prayed aloud. I knew that God, the only Principle, was the Principle of my being and that a break or sprain is wholly without cause. I declared this truth, and very soon the pain left and did not return.

My husband helped me to my feet and proposed going for a horse, but I knew that if nothing had in reality harmed me, I could walk, and I wanted to prove it. I sang some hymns from the Christian Science Hymnal, and then supported by my husband, I began the walk back to camp over the rough mountain trail. This walk was an experience of clinging constantly to Truth, and I was grateful for God's loving provision.

Since the ankle was still swollen and discolored after two days, my husband, who was not a student of Christian Science, asked me to go to the nearest town for an X ray. The next morning we walked into the doctor's office. The doctor expressed confidence that there was no break, but my husband still wanted the X ray. When the doctor returned with the picture he exclaimed: "It is unbelievable. There is a break, but it needs no setting. It is in perfect position." How grateful I was to be a witness to God's loving care. Those in attendance were so astonished and were such kindly folk that I felt free to acknowledge that I was a student of Christian Science. This statement was accepted very graciously with praise for our religion. Before long the ankle resumed its normal appearance. There have never been any aftereffects, and I am able to climb over rough mountain trails and walk long distances with freedom and comfort.

I am grateful for membership in The Mother Church and one of its branches and for the blessings which the Christian Science Sunday School is providing for the little ones in our family. Class instruction and the privilege of having served as First Reader, as well as in other positions in our branch church, fill me with gratitude.

I am trying to realize more and more the true import of our dear Leader's life and to express more gratitude for her discovery of Christian Science, the Comforter promised by our Way-shower, Christ Jesus.—
