THE SPIRITUAL ORIGIN OF MAN

From the May 1957 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The realization and application of the truths of man's spiritual origin, as taught in Christian Science, inevitably result in healing. The following instance illustrates this. A high school boy, who was a Christian Scientist, developed spinal meningitis. A Christian Science practitioner was asked to help. The facts of true being were prayerfully maintained in accordance with the statement of man's spiritual origin, as recorded in the first chapter of Genesis (verse 27), "God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him." In two days this boy was healed and completely free.

It is man's primordial right to reflect Spirit, God. It naturally follows that Life, God, expressed in spiritual qualities and incorporeal substance, constitutes and perpetuates man's being. Since Spirit could not create anything unlike itself, matter was never actually created; therefore matter has never entered into man nor man into matter, and God's man is not and never has been subject to matter's limitations or laws. The spiritual understanding of man's true nature corrects material discord by transforming human consciousness and thus bringing healing to the body.

In the record of spiritual creation in the first chapter of Genesis, we read (verse 3), "God said, Let there be light: and there was light." Each idea of God, then, unfolds in the radiance of spiritual glory and reality. The words (Gen. 2:6), "But there went up a mist from the earth," introduce the record of the false material sense of creation, and we read that out of the dust of the ground came Adam, and from Adam's rib came Eve. Thus from mist and darkness came inexplicable mortal man.
